The problem with a long running blog

I mentioned on my other property (here) that I had been on a binge of buying physical media of movies and shows that I enjoy so that I actually own and can watch whenever and wherever I want.

One of those series I added to my collection in 2023 was The Sopranos. The entire series, on Blu-ray disc, ran me about $50. A steal in my mind.

I am midway through watching rips on my Plex server, and I thought I would share some of my thoughts. But, alas, back in 2016, I had three posts:

Late to the party – The Sopranos

    Mid-Series Check in – Sopranos

    It’s Over (Sopranos)

Well shit, I already covered it well.

    Last thoughts:

All of what I wrote before is still true, and I got nothing. However, The Sopranos is and will remain one of the greatest pieces of television ever made. HBO has had some other follow on successes, but in my mind, The Sopranos stands alone.

    Line of Duty

I have been on a tear, watching British television shows, and especially their police procedurals. It began with Hinterland, then expanded into Broadchurch, and Wallander. All very enjoyable, all top quality. While searching for something in the same vein, Barbara found a recommendation for “Line of Duty“, and while it isn’t on Netflix, it was on Hulu.

Unlike the other police procedurals, this one has a twist. It focuses on a group that is charged with investigating and ferreting out corrupt practice in the police agencies. The group is AC-12, or Anticorruption unit 12. (more…)

    Streaming Video Notes

I do not watch much “regular” television. I have my Tivo set to record MotoGP, I have some of my favorite old TV shows set to record on MeTV (currently “Perry Mason” and “Get Smart”), and I simply can’t live without “Full Frontal”. Other than that, I watch Netflix, and am in general satisfied with that.

  • The good and the bad about Netflix streaming

I will come out and say it, I love Netflix streaming video. I like being able to watch what I want, without having to fiddle with the queue to get the right disk sent next.

I have really enjoyed watching some of the series I used to watch while growing up, and that is where the “bad” comes in. Of course, I remember Knight Rider being pretty awesome. But it is completely ‘meh’ now. Cheesy special effects, and David Hasselhof is an annoying a-hole.

I did enjoy watching all the “Rockford Files”.  I loved that show when I was a kid, and I still enjoyed watching the episodes. Lots of fun.

But it isn’t all roses. I was a huge fan of the X-Files when it was first run. I kind of drifted away after the 4th season, and sporadically caught an episode or two.  Lately, I re-watched them on Netflix, and being able to get through 2-3 episodes at a sitting, you can almost see in real time the Shark being jumped.  Of course this reminds me of why I drifted away (it had become all too predictable, and boring) in the first place.

I just wish that they would get the agreements in place to greatly increase the available movies. For one, I hate not being able to queue up all the James Bond flicks for a marathon. But even some old classics like “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolff” aren’t in their library, except by disk.
