When you Realize your Family is full of bigots

W

We all suspect that members of our family harbor some racism and/or bigotry. I mean, we all have that crazy uncle (or Aunt) who causes us all to roll our eyes at Thanksgiving by saying some completely insane shit out loud.

But, having grown up in Silicon Valley in the 60’s and 70’s where people of color were segregated due to a long history of redlining, and a lot of implicit racial segregation.

For fuck’s sake, I remember in the early 1970’s my parents fucking freaking out about busing minorities to our schools. Pretty fucking strange to hear that as a 5 or 6 year old. Hell, my high school had a single African American student, and I graduated in 1983.

Yep, it was a fucked up time.

Fast forward to 2022.

Last year (2021) my nephew married a wonderful Indian woman. She is lovely, warm, and her family is fantastic. They are truly happy and I am extremely glad for them.

A few weeks ago, we were told that they were expecting their first child. A welcome, and joyous occasion. This was communicated in a group text chat.

Unfortunately, my sister (one year younger) said something that was jaw droppingly inappropriate about a “half breed” baby being on the way.

What. The. Actual. Fuck.

This of course caused a lot of drama, and my sister being shunned by the family.

Of course, I expected my Trumpian brother to be the one to say the most insensitive thing to the group, and of course he came oh so close to the line of propriety.

Oh well, I guess this happens to all families.
